Q. Who are your influences and what is on your play list right now?
I am influenced by music as a whole, I find all music has some sort of effect on me. At the moment I'm listening to a lot of rap/hip hop and punk/rock.
Q.How did you get into creating music, what is your journey so far?
I got into creating music when I was 11 years old, my friend Cory Coke sold me a classical acoustic guitar for $3.00 I asked my mom for money for candy from the store - she agreed and when I returned, I showed up with my new $3.00 guitar. I ran to the basement where I would stay until I could play that thing. After locking my self in a basement room for years with that guitar I re-emerged as Matty Black and started my first band at age 14.... I played in roughly 10 different bands throughout the years, I've played more than 100 shows in my home town Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. Also went on a western Canadian tour in 2016.
Q. You're the singer in Kill Iris too - how do you split your time between the two?
My main band was Kill Iris we have just gone through a member change and brand change we are now "Dead Town" we will be recording an Ep this year 2020 and will be playing shows all over, My Matty Black stuff is really just to pass the time until "Dead Town" gets on its feet. I get bored and need to create so that's why I release some Matty Black stuff here and there.
Q. What's your most memorable gig so far? And what made it stand out for you?
Every gig is special and is really fun, but if I had to pick one it would be a show I played in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. While on tour, The whole place went f****** nuts! Beer came down on us like rain, I'm lucky I didn't get electrocuted! Every person in that place had a smile on their face including us the band; it was the moment I realized this was what I was meant to do.
Q.If you could collaborate with any artist dead or alive who would it be?
I would collaborate with any artist.
Q. What's coming up for you next?
Festival season with my band "Dead Town", a 2020 release of a 5 song EP, maybe a music video or two. As far as my Matty Black stuff is concerned I'll be dropping songs here and there as time goes on......probably soon lol
Q. Is there anything else you want everyone to know about you and your music?
I have a lot of songs for you guys! They're on their way.
