Policy - Interview

Policy is a Multi-Instrumentalist, DJ, Producer, Composer, Engineer & 2014 Winner “Best Drummer”. His latest album 'Echo Chambers' is out on Spotify. He talks to Tunebubble about being influenced and inspired by the world, surprising collaborations and big plans for 2021 into 2022...

Tell us a bit about your music background and how you got into making music?

I've been creating music since I was very young. I came from a musical family. My Grandfather played 2nd trombone for Frankie Carl, my GrandMother was on Broadway. My Mother and Uncles were in a rock n roll showtime band that toured all over the US and Canada for 25 years called "The Clevelend Band." I hung with the road crew. The stage was my playground. I would set up the drums, clean the piano keys, duct tape the mic cords. I'm a drummer first, then moved on to guitar, bass, piano, and vocals. After high school I relocated out to Los Angeles, CA and earned a few wings in the music scene as well as dabbled in the film industry.  During the late 90's I became the house percussionist here in the Cleveland, OH club scene with all the EDM DJ's. I also still get behind the drum kit in a few projects as well as I'm the house session drummer for the studio.

What have you been doing during lockdown? Have you found it to be a creative opportunity or not?

I've been staying very busy marketing and promoting the current album. It has been extremely creative. I've had in the back of my mind that I needed to get the bed studio back up and running. I'm in the process of doing some home remodeling so I broke down the studio after the release of Echo Chambers. I wasn't looking to get things up and running so soon, but just about a couple weeks ago I ended up firing things up and starting writing. It was a very smooth process and I'm so glad because the writing has certainly started off on a right foot.

You like to collaborate with other artists, who would you dream of working with?

I would love to work with Peter Gabriel. I've always thought Peter was a forward looking artist and liked to step out of the norm. I would love to work with Kate Pierson from the B-52's, I just love her voice. I like to work with artists where you would never see them on an EDM or Electro-Pop track. I like thinking not just outside the box, but with no box at all.

You play a lot of instruments, what's your favourite to play?

That's easy, the piano. I'll always be a drummer first, but piano has become my favorite instrument. I get most of the initial ideas from piano and certainly that was the case for most of the tracks that made it on to Echo Chambers. I will say that recently we got our favorite Martin acoustic guitar refurbished and I have been playing it all the time and getting some great ideas for new tracks.

Who are your main influences?

Well, certainly my family will always be a huge influence on me including my first drum teacher Mr. Tommy Cantwell. I would also say I'm influenced by all of my favourite artists listed. I've figured out that one can get influenced by many things, things that may not even be musical. I believe that when you are a listener to the world that the influences will find you.  Nowadays, I'm most influenced by Mr. Dave Weckl on the  drum kit. I got to spend a day studying with him in Chicago and it was such an amazing experience.

Tool - Aenima

deadMau5 - 4X4=12

The Catherine Wheel - Chrome

NIN - Pretty Hate Machine

U2 - Achtung Baby

Morrissey - Bona Drag

INXS - Live Baby Live

What’s coming up for you next?

What's coming next is a new album. I'm extremely excited and I've already got a handful of tracks ready for collaborations.  I will finish the bed tracks here at my home studio, then when ready send them over to the main studio, Advanced Audio Design Studios. There I work with my Co-Producer and Uncle, Michael Zaremba. I'm looking to release in early 2022. I've already started negotiations with an amazing singer out of Kuala Lumpur.  I still play the drum kit in a few full band projects. I just set up the live kit and started to get my chops together. It feels good to hit them drums again!!

Is there anything else you want everyone to know about you and your music?
