Sonia D is an Irish singer songwriter passionate about all ranges and styles of music, gathering music influences in particular from folk and indie folk music.
Sonia talks to Tunebubble about stage fright, her top 10 favourite songs and how she approaches writing mindfully.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your musical journey! I'm an Irish singer-songwriter from the west of Ireland, a place called Galway and I moved to Edinburgh in Scotland this year. The moment I knew music was special was when I was 4 and fell in love with Dire Straits playing a concert on the tv. I then started writing music at the age of 14 when I started learning the guitar and getting vocal lessons. I've been in bands and various projects over the years and last year decided to take the plunge and become a solo artist.
How have you found doing online Stage-it gigs? I love the Stageit platform for gigs! It's being such a safe space for me to perform and overcome stage fright and build a lovely community to hang out and chat and play my music and cover songs that people request.
How has it been going with your single 'Heavy? The response to Heavy has been amazing! So many have reached out to me and have said they love it and find it very soothing to listen to and a comfort. That means the world to me and the reason why I create music.
What influences you to write? Do you have a process?
Creating music is a form of therapy for me and also an escapism. I always feel great and more grounded and less overwhelmed when I create music and songs.
My process would be to first do something mindfully that would inspire me like a walk in nature, looking up at clouds, going to an art museum, watching a wildlife program. Then I find new music floating around in my head and start to create it on a guitar or keyboards or record a voice note on my phone.
What's been your most memorable performance?
Playing my first open mic night gig and playing two of my songs. I was so nervous and thought I wouldn't be able to do it but then the whole crowd went silent. It was so special and I really got into the moment of performing. They also had to pick their favourite performer of the night and you got a prize and they picked me! What a lovely surprise it was.

Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
I would love people to know more about me in general (besides my love of cooking and our dog Bowie, both things I also post about ) as I'm a very shy person so I hope through future vlogs people will get to know me more.
